CFAL Students Gear Up for NMTC 2025: Building Thinkers Beyond Textbooks

Every year, students of CFAL Mangalore take on the National Mathematics Talent Contest (NMTC), a prestigious national-level math exam conducted by the Association of Mathematics Teachers of India (AMTI). For us at CFAL, NMTC is not just another exam; it is a tradition that builds a culture of curiosity, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving.

What is NMTC and Why Does It Matter?

The NMTC is one of the oldest and most respected math contests in India, which started in 1968, designed to test more than just textbook knowledge. It challenges students with non-routine, thought-provoking problems that demand reasoning, logic, and creativity.

  • Levels range from Primary (Classes 5–6) to Senior (Undergraduate students).
  • The Preliminary round for 2025 took place on 23rd August 2025, followed by the Final round on 25th October 2025.
  • Over 1.2 lakh students from across the country participate each year, with the top 10% qualifying for the finals.

For many students, particularly at the Junior and Inter levels, NMTC acts not only as a stepping stone to Olympiads, but may also lead directly to INMO, alongside opening doors to advanced problem-solving platforms.”

Why CFAL Encourages NMTC Participation Every Year

At CFAL, we believe exams like NMTC bring out the true joy of mathematics; not rote memorisation but thinking differently. That is why, year after year, CFAL has integrated NMTC preparation into our academic culture.

  • Our Ramanujan Contest series, conducted monthly, sharpens students with puzzles beyond the school syllabus.
  • Exposure to NMTC questions makes students better prepared for competitive exams like JEE, KVPY, and Olympiads.
  • Students gain confidence, creativity, and resilience by attempting problems that have no shortcuts.

This commitment is why CFAL has produced consistent achievers in NMTC. For example, Vishruth Bhat (Grade 6), mentored at CFAL, secured 2nd rank in Karnataka and 8th rank nationally in the NMTC finals, a proud moment for the institute and an inspiration for peers.

More Than Just Marks, A Journey of Thinking

Unlike many exams, NMTC is not about speed or rote practice. It is about:

  • Discovering the beauty of problem-solving.
  • Learning to break down complex challenges.
  • Building the patience to think, reason, and try again.

For CFAL, this aligns with our broader mission: to nurture independent thinkers who can excel in JEE/NEET, pursue careers in STEM and thrive in a knowledge-driven world. Mathematics does more than sharpen your child’s exam performance, it creates a new kind of “problem-solving brain wiring,” as astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson wisely observes:

“…the act of learning how to do the math establishes a new kind of brain wiring in your mind, a kind of problem-solving brain wiring. So, it’s not about what you learn, it’s about what methods, tools, and tactics you must develop to solve the problem that you may never see again… but you will see other problems where these methods and tools will become immensely valuable to you.”

At CFAL, that’s exactly what NMTC training is about; not memorizing formulas, but embracing approaches, reasoning strategies, and flexible thinking that students can apply across academic subjects and everyday scenarios. This isn’t confined to math class, it’s a foundational skill that empowers them to tackle real-world challenges with clarity and confidence.

The 2025 NMTC Timeline

  • Preliminary Round: 23rd August 2025 (MCQs and fill-in-the-blanks, 2 hours).
  • Final Round: 25th October 2025 (Descriptive exam, 3 hours).
  • Eligibility: Students from Classes 5–12 and undergraduates, in different categories.

A Tradition That Will Continue

For 16 years, CFAL has championed the cause of STEM learning in Mangalore. Conducting NMTC every year is part of that mission, ensuring our students are not just exam-ready, but life-ready.

As we prepare our students for NMTC 2025, we invite parents, educators, and well-wishers to recognise the importance of such platforms. Exams like NMTC ignite the spark that goes beyond classrooms and textbooks, shaping future innovators, scientists, and problem-solvers.
